Siding Materials

All Behm Design garage plans use structural panel sheathing, such as OSB (oriented strand
board) or plywood, fastened to the wall framing, as the code compliant method for braced wall
construction, so there needs to be a structural panel below the siding material or the siding
material needs to be the structural panel.........
This is a very standard, conventional way to build
and there are many siding products to choose from.


With siding applied over sheathing the sheathing braces the framing and the siding protects
the sheathing. Siding materials can be made from natural wood (usually coniferous, like
cedar), man-made of wood products (like OSB or particleboard), cementitious (like cement
with wood fibers, HardiBoard for example), prefinished metals, vinyl, acrylic stucco, cement
stucco, as well as plastic products. These are typically applied over a vapor barrier, over the
sheathing. Most of our plans reference textured 7/16" thick x 8" OSB lapped siding with 1"
lap, but you can substitute any code approved siding product if preferred for your project.


With a combined structural-siding panel it's simply a prefinished, often textured, structural
panel. Louisiana Paific (LP) and Weyerhauser and a couple of the many companies offering
great structural siding panel products.The manufactured products provide specific installation procedures and product guarantees dependent on correct installation.
