Attic Access Pull-Down Ladders

Attic spaces are inside the roof and above the ceiling and also have no permanent stair (unlike a "loft" space within a roof) ... Our garage plans usually don't specifically call out attic access pull-down ladders but they are commonly used as a preferred method.........
(When a permanent stair is used to access the upper space it often defines the space as a second story so you'd have a two story building instead of a one story building with attic)

Often a simple access opening of no less than 22" x 30" in the ceiling is a building code compliant, minimum access to the attic. A more practical, user-friendly way to enter an attic space is the folding attic access pull-down ladder. These have been around for many years and, despite their utility and popularity, are the subject of many homeowner complaints - usually because they are old and rickety, probably worn out. Replacing the old unit with a new version can greatly improve stability, safety and comfort in use. The new products are superior to earlier models and can be retrofitted to older homes.

Another great advantage of using these units is they use no floor space when closed.

If you are building a new garage with attic space I recommend browsing websites in the resource list below and visiting your local building materials supplier to see actual examples of attic access ladders, their sizes, requirements and options. You may fin one that requires a larger opening into a trussed roof  which may require a special arrangement in the truss package to prepare an opening.
